SURROGATES

By admin

Release –September 2009
Cast- Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Rosamund Pike
Genre- action, sci fi thriller

Surrogates is a new release that has struck the big screens just recently, and this is another sci fi thriller from the same people who brought you the third part to Terminator. The movie has been directed by the acclaimed director Jonathan Mostow.
The plot of the film revolves around the future age, particularly in the year 2012, where “surrogates” are used to serve as robotic versions of the human owners. In an imaginative future scenario, humans are shown to be living in isolation and their only means of communication is the use of the surrogates, which are well-developed mechanical devices made to set the entire system for developed talking to all the other humans. It has Bruce Willis playing Agent Tom Greer from the FBI, who sets out on the trail of a surrogate program gone awry, that results in a murder. His journey upholds the film’s interesting tagline of ‘How do you save humanity when the only thing that’s real is you?’

However the movie is far from what a sci fi thriller is all about. It is quite an interesting take on the entire sci fi aspect and the future, but it still falls short of the notices. The plot is not strong and this is what makes the movie fall short of expectations. Firstly, the movie is completed in less than an hour and a half. It’s not that a movie has to be necessarily long or dragging, but the fact that the plot is complex and based in a futuristic world should have been a little more detailed and well explained. The movie does have its good share of cinematography, which has been rendered well. The other aspect of the movie that is disappointing is the fact that the movie really does not have a great package of acting talent, leaving aside Bruce Willis. The director made the same mistake with the Terminator series and now repeats it again with a cast of good actors who have failed to realise their roles. Actors like Ving Rhames and Bruce Willis have done an interesting job, but somehow, we can see that the movie is far from reaching what it’s trying to say. The movie is loaded with a good amount of graphics, particularly in the post apocalyptic settings, and that has what made the movie look brilliant.
There are some extremely eye-catching moments in the film, particularly the one with Greer’s interaction with the surrogate-hating group called the Dreads. Ving Rhames plays the leader of this group, and is called as the Prophet. A series of drama follows, which fails to captivate as much. The movie is an example of a good set of ingredients that are not mixed well, and thus, the end result is a half baked product.
Many of us are sure to still watch Surrogates for the hype that has been surrounding it. But it fails to meet the anticipated expectations.
