The story belongs to a couple (Black and Cera) of sluggish hunter-gatherers who set off on an epic journey through an ancient world after being expelled from their aboriginal village. It is a story of adventure and comedy. The Year One movie has been directed by Director Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day), who is also the co-writer of the script with Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg (writers of the brilliant TV series The Office),. Casting includes Jack Black, David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plasse,Hank Azaria, Michael Cera, Oliver Platt, Vinnie Jones and Juno Temple. The film producers are Judd Apatow, Clayton Townsend and Nicholas Weinstock. Ramis has made Jack Black and Michael Cera have a chain of situations so there may not be a gap without a gag. There are some scenes with a primeval theme like mating rituals in the village of protagonists where women are conked on the head with a large stick. There is another scene based on church customs like the heroes’ facing an altercating duo of brothers named Abel (Paul Rudd) and Cain (David Cross) or another person Abraham (Hank Azaria). In the course of time, Zed (Black) and Oh (Cera) finally arrive at Sodom, a city where evil doers are gainers”. In spite of the movie centralizing at one setting, the plot is still walking casually all over the place. Indeed, it is a definite comedy to make every viewer laugh when a prisoner chained to a prison has there feet towards sky . This scene will cause even Tommy Lee Jones to laugh. The story of the movie revolves around some crude content with some brief language and violence in a comical way.

The script contains a comical story that has elements from the bible without being a direct parody of it. It is a funny blasphemy. Year One starts with a huge explosion. Then we see particles joining together to form atoms, atoms come together to form molecules, then to cells; a drum beat that imitates a heartbeat goes on continuously. Eventually we see the sea and coming out of it the perfect woman – Maya (June Raphael) with tall, fit and busty figures. Another awkwardly emerging figure is a short, overweight and stumbling man – Zed – played by Jack Black. . Maya feels hungry after emerging from the ocean and Zed immediately confused her hunger for sexual desire and there is a little fun. The story then heads back to Zed and Maya’s tribe where Marlak (Matthew Willing) appears in the scene who is a healthy nincompoop having envy with Zed believing that Maya is his woman. Two more characters Oh (Michael Cera) and Eema (Juno Temple) are introduced here. Oh is Zed’s best friend. There are many situations which led Zed and Oh to come along and the rest of the script follows Zed and Oh travelling miles across Biblical Mesapotamia. There is one particular scene of Abraham and Issan which is funny in its own way but when viewed from the actual biblical story, this scene becomes funnier. The movie, however, is not focused on biblical satire.

Zed (Jack Black) is a lazy hunter in an ancient tribe of hunter gatherers. Oh (Michael Cera) is the best friend of Zed who always plays jokes about his feminist styles. Zed has love for Maya (June Diane Raphael) and Oh likes Eema (Juno Temple). When Zed is expelled due to eating from the tree of forbidden fruit, Oh goes along. They meet the fighting brothers Cain (David Cross) and Abdel (Paul Rudd). Almost like fugitives they continue, become slaves, escape, meet Abraham and stop him from sacrificing his son and finally reach the sin-ridden city of Sodom to save their girls. The aim is for the two boys to become men and get hands of their beloved women. But there are occasions for stopping the laughs in their efforts to obtain this goal. Indeed there are many jokes in an absurd language that rarely work. The movie Year One is indeed a funny film. It does not point to Biblical satire. The script has been written cleverly and wittingly that puts the fate of the movie in the director’s hand. The movie gives an impression of being a classic due to the cast being phenomenal.
Harold Ramis has a long experience of working in comedy and has multi directional career experience. The Year One movie has close proximity in spirit with his directional debut Caddyshack which was released in 1980. Black is difficult to define. He is confident but not overbearing or arrogant. Black’s funniest lines at times appear as a formation of witty and clever playwright. There appears to be many comedians that are following the ways to copy Black’s brand but are failing. There are various other comedians who have surrounded Jack Black in Year One. Cera has a similar comic side but sticks to the quieter roles and the dialogue and is a fitting match for Black. Oliver Platt is hilarious and an energetic feminine high priest. Cross makes an impressive crazy Cain. Vinnie Jones acts a violent guard with his insane, big round criminal stare. Besides these, we have screenwriters Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg
And the producer Judd Apatow apparently gathered a stable of all these comedians like a peer that collects horses. The end result is a reel of funny blunders which itself indicate the amount of fun there must have been during shooting. This reminds me of a few other funny movies I have seen such as Three Amigos, The Golden Child and Spaceballs. With all these funny actors joining together, the movie was worth seeing.
