A scene from Bourne Ultimatum

Universal Pictures has made and overall deal with the estate of The Bourne Identity author Robert Ludlum that gives the studio exclusive rights to the Jason Bourne character and first look at other Ludlum novels.

After the first three films turned turned out to be massive worldwide hits, Universal has signed on Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon for a fourth film that George Nolfi is already writing. The film will be produced by Frank Marshall and Ludlum Entertainment chairman Jeffrey Weiner, the film will be readied for a summer 2010 release.

So this will give the studio a hand in producing movies that were not even written by Robert Ludlum. The other big movie adaptation of Ludlum is The Matarese Circle the film was shopped by MGM and they signed on for Denzel Washington and they got the Wanted writers to script it. MGM has also set David Cronenberg to direct the film expected to begin production next year. Ludlum titles routinely turn into seven figures packages, including the 4 million dollar Paramount paid for Chancellor Manuscript in 2005, with Leonardo Di Caprio attached to star.

There is surely going to be a long list of movies that are going to be adapted from his books.
