The Trial of the Chicago 7, the Dreamworks project about the 1968 riots at the Democratic convention and their aftermath, is a high priority for the newly configured studio and is movie forward quickly.
Ben Stiller is looking at potentially direction the Chicago 7. At one point we had given news that Steven Spielberg was interested to direct this movie. But because of prior commitments he had to forthwith the project. After that it was Paul Greengrass who wanted to take this project up but he didn’t give the green light for this film. Dreamworks is using Chicago 7 as one of the big projects to come up this year. Variety reported that “discussions for Stiller to helm the film are very much at the exploratory stage, the actor and DreamWorks are mulling whether such a pairing would work for both parties.”
The film is written by Aaron Sorkin who is known for his work on A Few Good Men and the silly Charlie Wilson’s War. The project was said to star Sacha Baron Cohen as the hippie leader Abbie Hoffman but the casting is not certain as of now. Ben Stiller is fresh from his success of Tropic Thunder has really no experience in making something this serious. But I have a feeling the film will get an excellent treatment if he takes it up.
