David Gordon Green is sort of on a high after his recent success Pineapple express. His films have mostly been on the dark side. But the Pineapple Express has sort of taken him places. He is all set to take up Freaks of the Heartland written by freshman writers Peter Sattler and Geoff Davey. The company recently purchased the rights to the Dark Horse graphic novel written by Steve Niles.

Green and Dark Horse Entertainment president Mike Richardson are producing. Niles, who also wrote 30 days of night is executive producing for this movie.

The story is being illustrated by Gred Ruth. The book is a six part mini series that debuted in 2004 about the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involving Trevor Owen’s attempts to protect his monster of a 6 year old younger brother purchased the rights for the company.

Overture has been speeding up most of their projects in the last couple of years. They have Pandorum that we talked about yesterday shooting in Berlin, and the Crazies a reinvention of George A. Romero’s 1973 horror film, in development with Breck Eisner attached to direct the movie.

The Liberty Media just recently acquired the rights of the Swedish cult classic Let The Right One In, which will be helmed by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves. They have also bought the rights for Icelandic mystery Jar City and Israeli comedy 92 minutes.

David Gordon Green last two outings were Pineapple Express and Snow Angels. Two really beautiful film from two different genres.
