Body of Lies

Director: Ridley Scott

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Mark Strong, Golshifteh Farahani, Oscar Isaac

Runtime: 128mins

This film revolves around Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio), a CIA agent in the middle east.

Director Ridley Scott expertly unravels the story of CIA operative Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is given the job of finding a terrorist leader who has been responsible for bombings in public places in Europe. Ferris gets increasingly irritated and frustrated with his boss Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe)’s impatience and behind his back side operations, which more than once puts himself in jeopardy. Most importantly challenges the trust he is trying to build with Jordanian leader Hani (Mark Strong) and his growing love and feelings for a pretty Palestinian nurse Aisha (Golshifteh Farahani).

Ridley Scott has made another interesting film which is somewhere between Black Hawk Down and American Gangster. He sets the mood as soon as the movie starts with intense gripping sequences and action that will love you at the edge of your seat. His take on the middle east war was a dark, disturbing and depressing one which will surely make most people ponder about what is really happening there.

The two main characters are played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe seems to be gaining weight from each movie. His role is not as strong as leo’s, but thats what it was supposed to be like. His potrayal of a selfish, deceitful CIA boss makes him very unlikable and thats the whole point. If you did hate him in the movie, you would appreciate his acting only then. Leo on the other hand, has matured a lot from each movie and that can be seen here. He shows his grit and intensity in many noteworthy scenes. His charming personality coupled by some brilliant acting makes this role of his a must watch. Another performance which almost took the limelight from Leo was that of Mark Strong who played the Jordanian leader Hani. Mark Strong acted in the most suave manner possible. His short meaningful dialogues, jokes mixed with cold stares made his character the most unpredictable.

Although, the movie is not that much of a oscarworthy one, it definitely takes lot of guts to make this kind of movie, especially when the war in Iraq has been going on for some time now.
