A scene from the Visitor

The Visitor directed by Thomas McCarthy took the top prize at the 34 th Deauville Festival of American Film Sunday.

The film that has been garnering a good amount of praise takes a critical view on the US immigration policy. It tells the tale of a New York economics professor who finds that two illegal immigrants have moved into his apartment.

The runner up to the Jury prize went to Lance Hammer’s drama Ballast which depicts the effects of a suicide on two neighbors in the Mississippi Delta. The International Critics Award went to the pedophile drama Gardens of the Night directed by Damian Harris.

The film was light on stars this time. But there were some flashes in the entrance of Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen in town for the premier of their movie Appaloosa.

Kevin Spacey, Spike Lee, Samuel Jackson, Parker Posey, Juliette Binoche, William Hurt and Maria Bello also put in festival appearances.
