Finally the last film produced by the late Anthony Minghella and Sidney Pollack. The film had a successful screening in New York of “The Reader” The Weinstein Co. has decided to release the film for Oscar contention this year. The film had many casting problems during production with the main protagonist played by Kate Winslet kept on changing between her and Nicole Kidman. The film also stars Ralph Fiennes and German favorite Alexandra Maria Lara who seems to be getting some of the best roles of her career.
Given the deaths earlier this year of Minghella and Pollack, there was speculation that the film might face a delay. Scott Rudin, the co-producer, already has two films coming out later this year — “Revolutionary Road” and “Doubt.”
The film is based on the award winning novel by professor and Judge Berhard Schlink. It was first published in Germany and then translated into English for a United States release. The story is divided into three parts with each part taking place in a different time period. The film had some excellent reactions at its test screening and is surely going to be one of the strong contenders for the Oscar this year.
