The film is loosely based on the affairs of Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas played by Mathew Rhys. The story tells about how Vera Phillips falls in love for the first time played by Keira Knightley. This is despite the fact that Dylan is married to the beautiful Caitlin MacNamara played by Sienna Miller. The rivalry is prevalent in the beginning between these two fiery women but then they end up being friends.

Vera marries a soldier William Killick and that that makes Dylan jealous and this where he needs to choose who he is in love with. The film explores the life of this trio who seem to be on the path to destruction. The performances of the two leading women have been called phenomenal.
