A scene from the movie Dark City

Alex Proyas has directed for his adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s work now he is set to tackle Rober Heinlein’ novella The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag. It is story about a man who is not sure of his activities in the day and doesn’t know what he does for a living is getting increasingly disturbed. He tells this to a private detective who tries to find out what he is upto and it leads to a series of revelations. This sort of sounds like a mix of I Heart Huckabees and the Dark City which is one Proyas’ own creation. Dark City had a huge cult following and was said to have spawned the Matrix series. The film is aid to roll out by 2010.

“I read this story as a kid, and it really stayed with me,” Proyas explains. “It’s part of my creative DNA.” The novella was originally published in 1942. The story gets into the main characters body when Hoag begins to see a suspect residue on his fingernails. This leads to a series of revelations and some really interesting original ideas. The budget for the film will be in the range of around 40 to 50 million dollars.

I really have a feeling this might end up like one of the great science fiction movies like Minority Report, Blade Runner and Scanner Darkly. The book “The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag” was one of Heinlein’ best short fiction. The director who made both Dark City as well as the interesting I Robot is surely going to have his hands full with this project.
