Clooney in Michael Clayton

George Clooney is known to voice his opinions through his films. There has just been word that he might take up a project in which he will plays the lawyer of Osama Bin Laden’s driver.

Clooney who has brought the rights for the book on Salim Hamdan, an inmate at Guantanamo Bay who last week was sentenced to jail for his role in helping the al Qaeda leader. The film is surely going to be an eye opener and controversial as well. It is going to be a statement on the war of terror that has plagued the Arab countries. The book was written by journalist Jonathan Mahler and tell the story of Hamdan’s capture and trial, defended by a US navy lawyer, Lietenant Commander Charles Swift. The book has become a huge critical success

Just Last week Yemen born Hamdan was given a light sentence after spending 7 years in prison already of just 5 years. This case was taken as a key plank on the War on Terror designed to show that terrorists could be dealt with by Guantanamo. Hamdan was know to be part of the support group of Osama.

But many lawyers portrayed him as a simple man who had taken the job to feed his family. He was finally charged only of providing support to a terrorist.

The case was taken as a huge political even with many people seeing it as a chance to project a better image for Guantanamo. Meanwhile critics saw it as an abusive system that was using low level prisoners as scapegoats.

Clooney will be seeing the drama play out like a fictional legal thriller. The book The Challenge portrays Swift as a crusading little guy who wanted to win against all odds perfect for a Hollywood film. when offered the case Swift was totally inexperienced and few thought he could make a case out of it. But he fought the case till it was taken to the Supreme Court where he eventually won. But this victory caused him a lot of things like his promotion and even a divorce.

But Swift really fought on for this man Hamdan. When the judge had given him the next 5 years for his sentence. Swift asked the judge ‘The best chance for him to rehabilitate is to reunite with that family. He won’t put them at risk again,’. By the looks of it this is surely going to be one of those Kite Runner type movie if done in the right way.
