Patricia Clarkson has her hands full this year with a string of interesting projects. She seems to be the favorite among directors like Woody Allen and Martin Scorcese. But right now she is gearing up for her role with Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz in Elegy.
“INTIMACY is seductive,” says husky-voiced Patricia Clarkson. “It’s at times what I remember most about films; those moments I feel I should not have witnessed.”
The two films she is getting ready to release are Vicky Cristina Barcelona with Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz directed by the nutty talker Woody Allen and Elegy directed by my favorite Isabel Coixet whose earlier film The Secret Life of Words featured music from Mercury Prize winning Artist Antony and the Johnsons. The Secret Life of Words talks about a man who gets injured on a boat and is taken care of a nurse played by the talented Sarah Polley. But the new movie elegy seems to be another movie fit for her filmography. Clarkson plays a successful businesswoman and longtime paramour to Kingsley’s character. The two have some interesting scenes together
“I read it and said, ‘I love this.’ There’s not a lot there, but what’s there is choice,” she says of her role in “Elegy.” “She’s devastated not only because of the loss of a relationship she took to be, in her terms, perfectly defined, but the can of worms it opens. I . . . said, ‘I’m there! I’m ready to get naked with Ben Kingsley!’ ”
Clarkson seems to be really excited to work with some of the greatest forces of cinema like Ben Kingsley and Javier Bardem. But this should not mean that she is not a lesser force. Some of her performances on the TV show Six Feet Under and Pieces of April showed her traits of greatness.
“He’s very kind and very — he’s formidable, also. He isn’t touchy-feely, although I had to do both of those things with him,” she says wickedly of her “Elegy” costar.
“We shot the scene where we’re making love the very first day we shot,” she says and then mimics their introduction: ” ‘I’m Patty and these are my breasts. And, my goodness, hello, sir! And Ben!’ ”
Clarkson had this to say about her director Isabel “She has this buzz about her that is powerful amongst actors,” Clarkson raves of Coixet. “She is truly charismatic. . . . Passionate and formidable . . . she’s an elixir.”
“He sent me a lovely note.” She knew it would be tough to squeeze Allen’s film in, but how could she refuse? “I was shooting ‘Elegy’ and this movie with Stanley Tucci ["Blind Date"], and I was like, ‘Oh, my God . . .’ but it’s Woody Allen. He had me at the note. . . .
“He and Isabel are very different people but the great directors are all very present. Woody knows when something’s right. He hears it, he feels it, he knows it.”
Now to top all of this Clarkson is also signed for the ” Shutter Island” for Scorsese. This is surely some great luck Clarkson is riding on.
