Allegra Gellar is the greatest game designer in the world. She has just designed a game that is proving to be a portal into another world. In this world people seem to live with different identities and our totally away from their reality. This does sound similar to movies like the Matrix and Dark City. But there is a difference in this it is made by David Cronenberg. Some of you might know him from Eastern Promises and the History of Violence. But David’s favorite genre is science fiction. He seems explore so many possibilities in this movie that it is easy to loose your way in the plot. It talks about a society that has become increasingly dependent on games. But the gaming industry loves to thrive on this confused reality that is still a little premature for film standards. Cronenberg takes many of the flaws we face in games like the introduction of characters and even the underdevelopment of the background characters.
The film does concentrate on the detailing of the game and everything. But it also provides a moral commentary on how games seem to concern with everything we do in our daily lives. Many of the scenarios in this movie are happening to a certain extent even now. But it is still far away of what the gaming world can achieve. Cronenberg doesn’t really glorify the game he ponders over many of its insecurities. The future in the hands of Cronenberg is always very bleak. He doesn’t really want us to go there but he still wants to take a peek. He still respects this future regardless of what it might bring to all of us. The gaming industry has already been going through many of such incidents of violence in the games creating incidents of violence in reality. The virtual reality really destroys many of the morals that we face in daily life but it surely must not cause violence. We had seen such a commentary in a very small form in another beautiful movie called Elephant. But this can’t be the main cause of all the violence in my opinion. We really need to educate are future generations on the moral implications of the games they play.
