There is not much going on here so far as story is concerned. But Lantana is a film that is broadly summarized as a mirage of choices each of the five couples has to make. It is surely unique in the way that it tells the story about couples going through their times of crisis. But it is the thoughtful performances that give this film its gravitas. The feeling one gets after the end of this truly hypnotic thriller is one of like minded feeling of being rattled. The film explores the place each individual is left with on this planet Earth. These places are not something we choose but it is more thrown at us without any consequence of what we have to do.
It is through the very thin line of a story that the director Ray Lawrence works with his character. He is a listener also distinguishably patient with what the atmosphere can give to a story. He would love to stay awake for days with just the right moment to pass him by. He is surely a loner when it comes to emotional depth. He is sort reminds me of what Kubrick had done with Eyes wide Shut. No the film is not that slow but it really wants to find its voice from the cracks on the faces of people. The central character who sort of ties up everything is someone who is totally lost in herself but she forms the necessary catalyst to push this story forward. Barbara Hershey plays the Psychiatrist who has disappeared and everyone seems to have their lives change with this incident.
In the wake of this disappearance everybody is questioned. But the state of things in which she left this world is surely going to leave some unanswered questions. There are many villains in this world but each of them has been bathed in enough guilt to throw them to Salem. But thats the thing here the evil that comes out of this story has been around for decades. It has entered so many families and crippled them. But has anyone had the time to really talk about the issues considering this evil. People love to say that time will heal things. But for how long is this healing process? Will we ever reconcile to the consequences we have afflicted to other? All of us love to see criminals die and perish but how many of us are prepared to face the truth of why he/she turned?
