Starring: Elia Suleiman, Manal Khader
Directed By: Elia Suleiman
It is time for us to buckle up to new streak of color for cinema. It is something that has been discussed every time we see a David Lynch or the commercial director Charlie Kaufman. It leaves in several doubts of whether this is going to bring a huge divide for cinema goers or not. This might be a good time to discuss all these aspects after the arrival of a director like Elia Suleiman.
The film begins with a shot of some kids running after a man in a red fat suit. It takes us to point of no return with these kids chasing him down like some really bad dream. They are just small instances in this film that bring out the larger picture. Nothing is really connected here but there is a sense of time being manipulated at several instances. The main character doesnt even mouth a single word of dialogue. It does make you feel sort of left out from all this. For some of you it might be a huge exercise on your senses. But it does provide laughs at various instances for those who dont want to get anything from the story. But this is the divide that i have been talking about and fearing for many film goers. It divides many of the ideas of story telling and breaks the very foundation of it. The film doesnt get time to even bring a story out. It is stuck in its own ramblings something many audiences will find taxing. They might even shout out and call it art.
The expression Art imitates life doesn’t hold good. It leaves looking at ourselves in many different ways. At time we wonder if this flurry of creativeness comes out of how society has treated the writer. It also makes us wonder the various atrocities that drive such ideas to pop on screen. If this is the way cinema is going with all the depression surrounding it is not going to be a good picture for some. There is still time for those who are not aware of such happenings to go forward and take title of such nature. There is surely going to be an invasion of such films in many theaters. Cinema has come a long way from several transformations. It has a reached an age of multiplexes. They have provided an venue for a larger number of people to voice out several deviant expressions of cinema. So this will aid in its growth and bring in the chaotic and mind bending nature of it to fill force. So I just can’t wait for such a day when the Coming Soon pictures will be loaded with traces of this.
