12_davidcase_lgl.jpgDavid Chase, the creator of the acclaimed HBO TV series, The Sopranos, has entered into a deal with Paramount Pictures to write, direct and produce his first movie. The Sopranos is widely considered to be a masterpiece of pop-culture and one of the greatest shows to air on American television. Running for six seasons, it won numerous Emmys. It was set in New Jersey and centered on mob boss Tony Soprano and his family as well as the criminal organization that he headed. It is remarkable for its virtuoso depiction of various political, social, moral and philosophical themes in its layered storylines.

Other than The Sopranos, David Chase has also worked on The Rockford Files, Northern Exposure and I’ll Fly Away during his thirty year career in television. At the moment not much has been revealed regarding the details of this new movie other than the fact that it’s an original drama and it has nothing to do with The Sopranos. Paramount Studios chairman Brad Grey acted as producing partner on The Sopranos and he has shared a long-standing relationship with David Chase. “David is one of the great storytellers of our time, and his debut as a filmmaker is both highly anticipated and long overdue,” Grey said in a statement. That is true and The Sopranos along with a couple of other HBO shows are better than the majority of movies being produced by Hollywood today. But the requirements of the two mediums can be quite different. What makes some of these shows great is that they are not constrained by the two- hour limit of a regular movie. They can develop each and every character thoroughly and explore all the plot threads in depth due to their novelistic nature. If David Chase can adapt his vision to these constraints we should be in for a treat.
