rdm.jpgRonald D. Moore, the man responsible for the critically acclaimed hit TV series Battlestar Galactica is planning to create an original sc-fi movie trilogy. He has entered into a deal with Tom Cruise’s United Artists Banner for the same.

The re-imagined version of the 1978 franchise started airing in 2004 on the Sc-Fi channel in the form of a regular show, after a succesful mini-series. It has gone on to win numerous Emmy, Peabody, Hugo and Saturn awards. It chronicles the journey of the last surviving humans from the twelve clonies of Kobol, after their nuclear annihilation by the Cylons. The series has been praised for its nuanced, intellectually stimulating storylines and its thoughtful handling of relevant questions related to religious fundamentalism and politics.

Prior to this, Ronald Moore had also worked on Star Trek: First contact as well as episodes of Star Trek: The next generation, Carnivale and Roswell. In a scenario where good, authentic science fiction has turned into the rarest of rare entities in Hollywood, this sure sounds good. It’s been really long since we saw a well-made product in the genre. (During the last decade or so, other than the first installment of The Matrix, Gatacca, Dark City, two-thirds of Sunshine and low-budget independent movies like Primer, there’s been hardly anything.)

Tom Cruise runs United Artists with business partner Paula Wagner. Its next release is the Word War-II thriller Valkyrie, which ran into controversy during its shooting in Germany.
