Sometimes its not nice to watch a long journey unfold on screen. It takes its toll on the viewer who have come to be entertained. But this is not the case of Cold Mountain it wants us to wait smell a bit of the characters air and step back for a minute. The character Ada played by the heavenly Nicole Kidman is sort of an old soul who drifts into the country side and is shy to meet men who fall for her exquisite beauty. She is very unconventional in her vibes of seducing her man aptly named Inman(Jude Law). One of the most beautiful scenes is when she plays the piano on her way to her house while Jude law is ploughing away in the field. The scenes of unrequited love are handled with such grace it makes you wonder why this beautiful movie didnt get the awards it deserved.
For those of you who have watched this film it has some truly great scenes. The one in the church with dove who is trapped in it is filled with symbolism. The film is more of an exploration of Inman’s character going through a journey to go to his loved one. But while surpasses all these hurdles he has almost left himself at a far off place. This internal challenge he faces reaches to a breaking point till he finds Ada in one of the greatest moments in this film. The film also has a cliched american portrayal played by Renee Zellwinger who gives the role a little more than what many other actors have done with such roles. It is the role that takes us away from all the pathos of this movie.
The film takes Inman through the lives of several people he meets on his journey back. Some of these characters are magical almost like he is delusional from all that travelling. Each of them provide him with one characteristic that he takes back with him. There is a powerful cameo by Natalie Portman who gives Inman a place to stay. But her reasons for him to stay is out of comfort for the loss of her own husband.
There also scenes of premonitions that Nicole kidman receives from a well. The scene that she looks out for in her mirror comes to her at a time when she has changed. Her life of waiting for this man has made her tougher but still sensitive. Nicole at times feels weak but its her careful use of her voice that turns her almost into an angel. The beauty of the film is told through several of her voice overs. The opening scene also begins with her voice. It adds so much more to the already existing beauty of this film.
But after all this splashing of colors on the screen are we still satisfied by the outcome that these two lovers were given. I dont know about that but i lost signs of my youth and began to hate what the youth does to this ever changing world.
