Film noir-

How many of these movies have been attempted?

How many of these have we seen?

inBut when a single film captures it in all its forms that is when we get Sin City. A film that is meant to just blow you away and leave your head in your ass and leave it locked in that dark place. The humor in this film is brutal involving a lot of dismembered heads, cannibals, head shots, bombs spraying bowels and women who take their men for granted. It will take another one of these films to better upon this one. I can’t wait for Part 2.

Robert Rodriguez a man who lived in green screens for quite sometime. He has reached a stage in his life where he can call the green walls his home. He worked with it in some absolutely forgetful movies and waited for this one to burst into the silver screen. I can’t believe how he managed to get performances out of actors who had nothing around them to hold onto. Frank Miller who was chased around like a dog by Robert to start this project would finally get some respite to see his baby walk the majestic silver screen. Hail the men who encompass the three stories that form this movie- Marv, Hartigan and the inspiring Dwight. They inhabit this world created by Frank Miller in his comic books written in the 90s.

The film opens in a balcony with a lady waiting for someone to heed. There in comes a man who just offers her a smoke and chance of an affair. A gun shot is heard and we enter the world of Sin City and in the famous words mouthed by Marv “Walk down the right back alley in Sin City….. And you will find anything…..anything.” Each character mouths a dialog that envisions the whole scenario leading to the final outcome.

Hartigan is the next in line to be passed judgment upon. All these men lead fractured lives knowing that the very reason they intend do what they do is because of their weakness for one particular woman in their lives. These women offer them some respite in their harsh and cold lives. It leads them to make mistakes and even sometimes cause rebellions that are uncalled for.

Dwight comes in with a whisper and aimlessly executes his kills. He is played by the strongest cast in the whole film Clive Owen. He breathes despair, anger and provocation into this role with extreme sensitivity. He is a tough act to follow. He is left with some of the most thoughtful scenes done in cinema. The scene he does with Benicio Del Toro is one of the crowning achievements in this film. The understanding of dialog is what makes this scene so much deeper than what it actually is.

But all said and done this is by far and the only great movie made by Robert Rodriguez. He will be known for this at least for another decade. His next movie should be another kids film on some kid with the power of a shark. But we should wait for his next Sin City till then I can sleep on whatever he makes in the future.
