This is one movie where you did think you got it all figured out but it is not the case. Coen Brothers have churned out an instant classic, a true masterpiece with perfect execution, kept very close to its adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s acclaimed novel. With some of the most powerful performances of the year, Joel and Ethan Coen have made a brilliant suspense filled intricate thriller which is surely one of the best films this year.

A hunter by the name of Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) stumbles upon a drug deal gone wrong and decides to run away with the $2 million, he is relentlessly pursued by several groups, including cunningly vicious psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), cocky hit-man Carson Wells (Woody Harrelson), and Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) . While Llewelyn struggles to stay alive and protect those he loves, he has to remain one step ahead to ensure he doesn’t cross heads with the above three people, which ultimately leads to a relentless hit and run situation which has gone beyond his control.

The movie moves along in its non-linear narrative style. The events are not shown in full detail, more importance to its aftermath and what led to it, thus playing around with the wandered viewers minds. The film’s detailing is very much faithful to its novel and its not for someone who expects some basic information spoon-fed to them. The reason the Coen Brothers chose this story is because its similar in style to their previous films.
Good story needs good performances from its cast members and thats exactly what the leading men of this film have delivered. Josh Brolin has given his most commendable effort yet. He draws us into his unfortunate situation, and not knowing what his intentions are, all we want is that he remains alive. Javier Bardem should definitely win an Oscar (pretty sure he will get nominated). No one could have played the cynical, diabolical, no fear persona the way he did. The worst hairdo in cinema history to go along with being a ruthless killer, has his own principles. A coin toss to determine the fate of his victims called by themselves. You won’t like him but he will stun you by his mesmerizing presence. Tommy Lee Jones keeps the conversations and the dialogues going, also narrating certain scenes mentioning some of events that took place. The rest of the cast did well to support the lead actors and the directors who was’nt expecting anything less.
No Country for Old Men is a great achievement for the Coen brothers. Their masterful precision in unconventional storytelling which unfolds into a thrilling saga of murder, greed and fate will leave you stunned and wanting to watch it all over again.
