inThis is the second Todd Haynes film i have reviewed. There is a lot of diversity which is really hard to let go off. He is really good at detail which creates another wordily feel to the film. This one is about a David Bowie character and his rise and fall from grace. The story is narrated from the point of a gay journalist fan played by Christian Bale. He is left with the task of writing a piece on Brian Slade a bisexual rocker who was famous during the glam rock age. The film follows his life through a series of interviews with people close to him. The movie is very reminiscent of Citizen Kane in its structure of the voice overs. There are three different parallel stories which is something the director is famous for his very own rule of three. Where there are three people whose lives are interwined by the end of the film.

inThere are a lot of absurd images which create some of the richest palette from where this film comes from. Some of the costumes are so well detailed we just wish if this movie was shot in High Definition. The names of the characters and some of the music are made for the time. This was done after David Bowie didn’t approve of the script. The character which Ewan Mcgregor plays has shades and likeness to Iggy Pop. There are also some references to the era with a beautiful willing suspicion of disbelief which the director has adopted. This movie talks about the age of the sexual revolution. But none could match up to the characters who they worshiped the rock gods. They were the ones with the images to solidify their place in history. Images were used as a source of inspiration for these peoples work and music. Todd Haynes is an avid fan of the pop culture. He has also gone to make the biopic of Bob Dylan with several impressions of him played by different actors. His idea of playing with images and words is lyrical at times.

There are also some noteworthy performances by Christian Bale and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. They are sync with the look and understand the character like its a part of them. There are some sets which just stand out because of the exotic camera angles. But this movie is feast for the senses as well. The music also plays out in a unique style almost merging with dialog. This is a must watch for all those Glam Rock lovers because these Gods will never come back again.
