This is a story of the famous sex researcher Alfred C. Kinsey whose work was adept in the subject. The protagonist was played by Liam Neeson who takes to this role with such passion and sensitivity and gives us a very diligent Kinsey who only sought out to his work with his trademark wit and intelligence. Laura Linney plays his wife who he meets at college and begin a awkward relationship in the beginning but ends up being one of the catalysts for his research. His meticulous listing and recovery of data for his projects makes a lot of eyes turn and tongues to wag. But you have to hand it to Bill Condon whose previous work Gods and Monsters shows his sensitive handling of the subject. This movie will arouse your intellectual senses like never before with startling images of sexuality. It is one of the most comprehensive movies on sex i have ever seen so knowledgeable yet so gentle.
There are moments when the viewer might question the man’s drive or objective. But Kinsey is like every man trying to understand things better the only difference with him is that he wants it all cataloged so that he could provide the information to all the couples left in the dark like his own. The character that Liam plays has a striking resemblance to Schindler but there is another dimension to this which is the sex itself.
There are some tender moments with his dad which show how this man was shaped to becoming what he was. There are also moments where we enter into the inner sanctums of these two men Father and Son when Kinsey asks him about his sexual problems. Sex is a means to which he opens the lives of people to show a world of lesser boundaries. There is a great deal of respect given to characters in this movie even though they have done despicable acts of bondage, fornication and sexual intercourse with different species. But this is where Bill Condon shines a light to the world by not judging these characters but studying and analyzing them.
Kinsey looks at man for what he is and not what he has become. He makes humans a very endearing species. In the closing moments of this movie we see his love for all species is very evident when he looks at some trees and talks about how some African tribe think of them.
Kinsey says ” Mac did i ever tell you about the Ambera , they are an ancient east african tribe, They believe Trees are imperfect man internally bemoaning their imprisonment. The roots that keep them stuck in one place but i have never seen a discontented tree. Look at this one the way its roots are gripping the ground. I believe it really loves it.” Then he smiles and says ” Comon Mac we have work to do. ” He then just walks away.
