This is a story of two friends (Kirk and Mark) who go through the forests of Cascade mountains, east of Portland to find one thing a sense of regret. There is a whole lot going on in this story in these characters minds. They meet each other after a long time which creates a broken bridge of communication between which is not evident in the beginning but it creeps through some of the later reels.
The story begins with Kirk calling up Mark at his home where he and his pregnant wife stay on their own. Its been long time since these two friends have met. Kirk heeds to the call and goes over to Mark’s place for a journey to the forests to find some springs which Kirk found out from one of his friends.
This whole journey takes place during the Bush presidency which can be found out from many of the radio voice overs from Mark’s car. The journey comes with its usual plots like they get lost in the forests but finally find the place. But this film doesn’t deal with the wanderings of these two friends its more to do with what they go through this whole time they are together. All the emotions in this movie are really subdued and at times very touching. It almost seems as though Mark is just a shadow of himself with all the interactions he has with Kirk in this film.
There are some beautiful moments in this movie when Kirk tells mark that he really misses him and he wants them to be real friends again. The way that scene is handled just needs to be watched to be believed. There is also a moment in the cafe when Mark tells Kirk that he never doubted him. These are the moments which create a sense of longing in their relationship which the audience can see on their faces which just gestures.
The director employs a very minimalistic approach to the the whole cinematography and sounds in the film. Yo la Tengo creates alot of spaces within the script with their breezy soundtrack. Daniel London plays Mark with such understanding that it seems he has lived through this experience and he brings in a beautiful solitude to his character. Will Oldham is a wanderer by heart whose soul still wonders even after the credits roll
Starring: Will Oldham, Tanya Smith and Daniel London

Kirk is a hippie, someone this generation would call a failure. Mark finds in him traces of his past, but can relate to him no more; until they hit the mountains that is. There is no transformation, no conflicts, only a valiant attempt to emerge out of judgments. The words are not spoken but felt, and the audience is left on a wander trail of their own. If not for anything else, watch this one for the scenery. Truly brilliant.
